What Makes This Crochet Wreath Special

This wreath combines smart construction with classic holiday textures. Instead of crocheting directly around a fragile foam ring, you work a long, flexible stuffed tube in single crochet that wraps neatly around your 30 cm foam base, giving the wreath a plump, professional finish. The leaves are constructed with ribbed texture for a realistic botanical look, while the berries use clustered bobble stitches to create plump, three-dimensional spheres that mimic mistletoe or holly berries.

Skill Level

  • Required skills: Working in the round, working in rows, basic increases and decreases, bobble stitch technique, sewing pieces together with a yarn needle.
  • If you know your basic stitches and feel comfortable working with small motifs, you will easily master this pattern!

Pattern Instructions

Pattern Notes

  • The wreath tube is worked in continuous spiral rounds without joining; use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch of each round.
  • Leaves and berries are worked separately and sewn onto the covered wreath form.

Section 1: Wreath Tube (Sage Green, make 1)

Foundation: Ch 32, join with a sl st to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.
Rnds 1 to 140: sc in each st around (32 sc).
Stuff the tube firmly with polyester fiberfill as you work, continuing every 20 rounds.
Rnd 141: (2 sc, dec) x 8 (24 sc).
Rnd 12: (1 sc, dec) x 8 (16 sc).
Rnd 143: dec x 8 (8 sc).
Fasten off, leaving a 30 cm (12-inch) tail. Thread tail through remaining 8 loops, pull tight to close, and weave in securely. Wrap the completed tube around your 30 cm foam ring, and sew the two open ends together.

✅ Checkpoint: Your sage green tube should be stuffed firmly and wrapped snugly around the foam ring, completely hiding the white foam underneath.

Section 2: Botanical Leaves (Sage Green, make 24)

Foundation: Ch 12.
Row 1: Working in the back bump of the chain: sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, tr in next 2 ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, ch 2, pivot to work down the opposite side of the chain foundation; sc in first ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next 2 ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st to first st to join (24 sts).
Fasten off, leaving a 15 cm (6-inch) tail for sewing.

Section 3: Bobble Berries (Cream, make 12 clusters of 3 berries)

For each berry, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring, sl st to join (6 sc).
Rnd 2: (inc) x 6 (12 sc).
Rnd 3: (sc2tog) x 6 (6 sc).
Stuff lightly with a tiny pinch of fiberfill.
Rnd 4: sc2tog x 3 (3 sc).
Fasten off, close the hole, and leave a tail. Make 3 individual berries and sew them together into a tight cluster. Repeat to make 12 total berry clusters.

Section 4: Buffalo Check Bow (Red and Cream, make 1)

Using Red yarn (or working with checkered fabric ribbon as shown in photos):
Foundation: Ch 11.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (10 sc), turn.
Rows 2 to 60: ch 1, sc in each st across (10 sc), turn.
Fasten off. Pinch the center of the strip to form a bow shape, wrap a short length of yarn tightly around the middle to secure it, and attach two hanging ribbon tails (each 15 cm / 6 inches long with an inverted V cut at the bottom edge).

Assembly

  1. Position the Bow: Attach the buffalo check bow securely to the bottom center of the wrapped wreath tube.
  2. Arrange the Leaves: Group the 24 crocheted leaves into pairs and clusters. Arrange them symmetrically radiating outward from the center bow along the left and right sides of the wreath. Whipstitch each leaf securely to the sage green tube.
  3. Add the Berries: Nestle the 12 cream bobble berry clusters in small groups among the leaf clusters, sewing them down firmly so they pop out in high relief against the green foliage.

💡 Designer Tip: Pin all your leaves and berries into position with sewing pins first before stitching them down permanently. This lets you step back and check the balance of your composition!

Size Customization Tips

  • Larger Wreath: If you use a 35 cm or 40 cm foam ring, increase your starting chain for the wreath tube by multiples of 8, and add extra rows until the tube meets length requirements. Make 6 extra leaves for every 5 cm increase in ring size.
  • Smaller Wreath: For a 20 cm mini door wreath, start with ch 24 for the tube, work 90 rounds, and scale back to 16 leaves and 8 berry clusters.

Care Instructions

  • Spot clean gently with a damp cloth and mild soap if dust accumulates.
  • Do not submerge in water or machine wash, as the foam ring and internal stuffing can trap moisture.
  • Store flat in a breathable cotton garment bag or box during the off-season.

FAQ

Can I use cotton yarn instead of acrylic?

Yes! Cotton yarn gives a crisper stitch definition, especially for the leaves and berries, though it is slightly heavier. Make sure your gauge matches so your tube fits the foam ring properly.

How do I attach the wreath to my front door without damaging it?

Use a sturdy over-the-door wreath hanger padded with felt, or attach a suction cup hook rated for heavy outdoor seasonal items.

Are these materials safe for children to handle?

Yes, acrylic yarn and polyester stuffing are non-toxic. However, because this is decorative home decor rather than a toy, keep it out of reach of very young children to prevent pulling on sewn-on embellishments.
