What Makes This Chunky Cabin Crochet Slipper Special

This design was created specifically to solve the problem of drafty hardwood and tile floors during cold months. First, the sole is constructed by joining two separate oval soles together, providing twice the thickness and cushioning of standard slippers. Second, the foot section is worked seamlessly in sturdy half double crochet stitches, featuring a bold dark toe cap and clean accent stripes. Finally, the vertical ribbed cuff folds down around the ankle for an authentic, classic cabin style that stays snugly in place.

Skill Level

This project is suitable for an adventurous beginner or intermediate crocheter. You will need to know:
* Working in continuous rounds and turned rows
* Basic increases (two stitches in one stitch)
* Working into the back loop only (BLO) for ribbed texture
* Joining pieces together with single crochet and slip stitches

If you can make a standard beanie or dishcloth, you can easily finish this easy crochet slippers project in a single evening!

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool 170 g / 106 yds (97 m) Excellent bounce, durable, machine washable
Bernat Softee Chunky 100% Acrylic 100 g / 108 yds (99 m) Soft, budget-friendly, wide color range

Special Stitches Explained

  1. Back Loop Only (BLO): Instead of inserting your hook under both top loops of a stitch, insert it only under the back loop (the loop farthest away from you). This creates the stretchy elastic ribbing on the ankle cuff.
  2. Joining Double Soles: Place two sole pieces wrong sides together. Insert your hook through both loops of the top sole AND both loops of the bottom sole, then complete a single crochet stitch. This binds both thick layers into a single cushioned platform.

Pattern Instructions

Pattern Notes

  • Written for Women’s size Small with Medium and Large in parentheses: S (M, L).
  • Toe section is worked in continuous spiral rounds (do not join). Use a stitch marker to move up each round.
  • The upper body switches to turned rows after the foot length is reached to create the opening for the instep.
  • Ribbed ankle cuffs are worked flat in turned rows, seamed into a tube, and sewn to the upper ankle opening.

Section 2: Upper Foot & Heel (Make 2)

The upper is worked toe-up in continuous rounds, then split into turned rows for the foot.

Toe Cap (Charcoal Gray CC)

  • Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in magic ring (6 sc).
  • Rnd 2: Inc in each st around (12 sc).
  • Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc) x 6 (18 sc).
  • Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24 sc).

* Rnd 6: sc in each st around (30 sc).

Stripe Sequence & Main Foot

  • Rnd 7 (Change to Oatmeal MC): sc in each st around (24 (27, 30) sc).
  • Rnd 8 (Change to Charcoal CC): sc in each st around (24 (27, 30) sc).
  • Rnd 9 (Change to Oatmeal MC): hdc in each st around (24 (27, 30) hdc).
  • Rnds 10–13 (10–14, 10–15): hdc in each st around (24 (27, 30) hdc).

Heel Opening (Oatmeal MC)

Now work in turned rows across part of the round to leave an opening for the ankle.

  • Row 14 (15, 16): ch 1, turn, hdc in next 16 (18, 20) sts, leave remaining 8 (9, 10) sts unworked for instep (16 (18, 20) hdc).
  • Rows 15–21 (16–23, 17–25): ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across (16 (18, 20) hdc).

Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch (30 cm) tail. Turn slipper inside out, fold the heel edge in half, and seam the back heel shut using a tapestry needle. Turn right side out.

Section 3: Ribbed Ankle Cuff (Charcoal Gray CC, Make 2)

  • Foundation: Ch 13.
  • Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn (12 sc).
  • Rows 2–24 (2–26, 2–28): Working in BLO, sc in each st across, ch 1, turn (12 sc).

Fold the ribbed strip so Row 1 meets Row 24 (26, 28). Slip stitch across through both layers to form a ribbed tube. Do not fasten off.

💡 Designer Tip: Working in the back loop only creates vertical ridges that stretch over your foot while hugging your ankle snug when folded.

Assembly

  1. Attach the Ribbed Cuff: Align the bottom edge of the ribbed tube with the ankle opening of the main slipper body. Using Charcoal Gray yarn and a tapestry needle, whipstitch the cuff evenly around the opening. Fold the upper half of the cuff down over the seam.
  2. Double Sole Attachment: Stack two Charcoal Gray soles together with wrong sides facing inward. Place the assembled upper foot section on top of the stacked soles.
  3. Align the heel, toe, and side edges.
  4. Using Charcoal Gray yarn (CC), work 1 round of single crochet through all three layers (the upper edge, the inner sole, and the outer sole) around the perimeter: 45 (49, 53) sc.
  5. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc and fasten off.

Finishing

  1. Weave in all loose ends on the inside of the slipper using a yarn needle.
  2. Gently stretch the body of the slipper by hand to shape the toe and heel curves.
  3. Repeat the full process for the second slipper to complete your pair.

Size Customization Tips

  • Adjusting Foot Length: Add or subtract rounds of hdc on the main foot (Rnds 10–13) before splitting for the heel opening. Each extra round of hdc in super bulky yarn adds approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) in length.
  • Adjusting Width: If you have narrow feet, use a 7.0 mm hook for the upper section while maintaining an 8.0 mm hook for the soles. For wide feet, add 2 additional stitches on Rnd 5 of the toe box.

Care Instructions

  • Washing: Hand wash in cold water using a mild wool detergent or gentle soap.
  • Drying: Reshape while damp and lay flat on a dry towel away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Do not tumble dry, as high heat can shrink the wool blend fibers.

FAQ

Can I make these slippers with medium weight (Category 4) yarn?

Yes, but you will need to hold two strands of worsted weight yarn together throughout the pattern to match the gauge of super bulky yarn.

How do I make the soles non-slip on hard floors?

Apply small dots or lines of clear silicone sealant or puffy fabric paint to the bottom of the outer soles once finished. Allow 24 hours to dry completely before wearing.

Are these slippers suitable as a quick crochet gift idea?

Absolutely! Because they are worked in super bulky yarn with an 8.0 mm hook, a full pair takes only about 2 to 3 hours to complete, making them an ideal winter crochet pattern for holiday gift-giving.
